History

The Kenmare area has been inhabited for a long time. There is some evidence of Celtic occupation, with one of the largest stone circles in Ireland. The town has an ancient bridge called Cromwell Bridge. This name comes from the deformation of the Gaelic Cromleach. This bridge is six meters long over the river.
The city was visited by Charles de Gaulle, former president, during his stay in Ireland in 1969.

The Neolithic chromlech is a circular monument formed by nine main stones. For the local population and for tourists, it was known by the patois name of “Las Naou Peyros”. Like other megalithic sites, the cromlech of Kenmare was feared by passers-by, a legend explaining this real terror.
